The big man with the big plans for Parabowls Singapore.

Sports has long been a platform for resilience and transformation, yet many disciplines remain under-represented.

One of them is lawn bowls, a sport that holds immense potential for persons with disabilities and the elderly.

At the forefront of changing this is Ganesh Ramanathan, the newly appointed president of Parabowls Singapore, who is determined to make lawn bowls a widely recognised and accessible sport.

Ganesh’s journey into lawn bowls began in 2011 when he sought an active lifestyle.

His passion led him to leadership roles in Bowls Singapore before joining Parabowls Singapore, where he became president in 2024.

His appointment coincided with the organisation’s 20th anniversary, setting the stage for a new era of expansion and awareness.

Ganesh’s main ambition is to increase awareness and participation in the sport.

“Because not many of them know about the sport simply because it is not widely played or commonly played is not visible,” said Ganesh in an interview with MoneyFM’s Zia-ul Raushan, which was pitched by Singapore-based regional public relations firm SW Strategies.

SW Strategies is Parabowls Singapore’s Official Media and PR Partner till December 2025.

A MAN AND HIS VISION

Ganesh’s vision includes securing more playing venues and collaborating with organisations supporting persons with disabilities and seniors to introduce them to the sport.

Lawn bowls are ideal for seniors and individuals with disabilities due to its low-impact nature.

“It is suitable for the seniors and elderly. It is not fast-paced. You don’t depend on speed or strength. You can play socially of course,” he said.

He also aims to challenge the perception of disability sports as secondary to mainstream athletics.

With World Bowls integrating para and able-bodied competitions, Ganesh believes this recognition should extend to local sports as well.

SHOW HIM THE MONEY

Financial sustainability is another priority.

While the Singapore Disability Sports Council provides some support, corporate sponsorship is key.

Ganesh encourages businesses to invest in Parabowls through sports kit sponsorships, marketing collaborations, and pro bono services.

As an Institution of Public Character (IPC), donations to Parabowls Singapore qualify for tax exemptions, making corporate partnerships mutually beneficial.

Ganesh inherits a legacy of transparency from his predecessors, who set the standard that led to Parabowls Singapore winning the Charity Transparency Award twice.

He is committed to maintaining and strengthening this tradition while working towards his ambition of seeing Parabowls Singapore thrive as a respected sport with ample opportunities and recognition for its athletes.
