After almost seven years away from a Singapore dugout, former national coach V. Sundram Moorthy wants to have a shot at being a national coach again.
The 59-year old, who last led the Laos national team from 2018 to 2020 before transitioning into a technical director role believes he has unfinished business in the sport, he said in an interview with The Straits Times.
He left his role as national head coach in April 2018 by mutual consent after going throufh a full calendar year without a win to his or the Lions name.
“After my role as technical director (ends) next year, I would love to come back to take a (national) team.
“It could be Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, I’d give it a shot again.”
“The fire is still burning.
“I miss it. I miss the press conferences, the journalists, the fans, I miss the day-to-day action… even the pressure. It’s part of the game, but you have to come back and feel it again,” he told The Straits Times.
Reflecting on his time in Laos, he said his role as technical director has given him a different perspective.
He highlighted the progress made in Lao football development, including a structured youth system and an increase in qualified coaches from fewer than 200 to more than double that number.
He also encouraged Singaporean coaches to seek opportunities abroad and challenge their comfort zone.
“If you are going to Cambodia or Laos, you get experience taking the youth (or) national teams. Maybe you will take a pay cut but you will get the experience,” he said.
