Akbar previously helmed the Stags during the 2016 season and guided them to a second-place league finish and a memorable Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup quarter-final run.

Since then, the 48-year-old has carved out a reputation for himself across Asia.

He became the first Singaporean to manage in the Philippines Football League, leading Global Cebu FC to the AFC Cup semi-finals in 2017, a historic milestone for any Filipino club at the time.

A year later, he was on the move again to India.

Appointed head coach of Chennai City FC, Akbar led the team to the I-League title in the 2018/19 season and was named Coach of the Year for his efforts.

His most recent stop was in Thai League 1 in 2023, where he became the first Singaporean to manage in the top flight of Thai football, following a stint in Balestier Khalsa.

With regional experience and a proven track record, he now takes charge as the Stags prepare for the 2025/26 campaign, with their sights set firmly on domestic success and continental progress.
