  • Akbar Nawas lands at Hougang United as a technical director.

Hougang United have confirmed the appointment of Singaporean coach Akbar Nawas as the club’s new Technical Director.

His appointment comes just days after he parted ways as head coach of BG Tampines Rovers.

Earlier this year, Akbar was named head coach of Tampines Rovers in June, returning to the club he first led in 2016.

His stint lasted 83 days, during which he guided the Stags to the 2025/2026 Community Shield after a win over Lion City Sailors.

He left the club in early September after three matches, with Noh Rahman appointed as his successor the following day.

Akbar, 49, is one of Singapore football’s most experienced coaches, with a career that has taken him across the region.

He guided Chennai City FC to the I-League title in 2019 during a three-year spell in India, before taking charge of Cebu FC in the Philippines.

He has also worked with top-tier clubs in Thailand.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Hougang said Akbar’s appointment would “bring discipline, structure, and a winning mindset to all levels of the club”, while also strengthening technical development, regional partnerships, and player pathways.

“Akbar is no stranger to the regional football scene. His international experience and leadership will be key in raising the standards at Hougang,” the club added.

The move marks another return to Singapore football for Akbar, who will now oversee the Cheetahs’ technical direction.
