Singapore Sailor Cheryl Teo gets Olympic Boost.
2017 Southeast Asian Games gold medallist Cheryl Teo has received an Asian Games 2018 and Tokyo 2020 boost from the Chiam See Tong Sports Foundation.
After applying for funding support in her quest to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, the 19-year-old received her New Year gift from Mr Chiam See Tong on 30 December 2017 at the Toa Payoh Swimming Complex during the Foundation’s Splash for Singapore 2017 fundraising programme.
Teo said, in a Facebook post: “Thank you, Chiam See Tong Sports Foundation for the support in our sporting journey.
“It was an honour to meet patron Chiam See Tong, chairman and swimming legend Ang Peng Siong and vice-chairman Jose Raymond.
“We are deeply blessed to have passionate individuals who are supportive of our aspirations in bringing glory to our nation.
“The cash sponsorship will help us be in the best condition for our upcoming competitions. 2018 is going to be a great year with the Olympic Qualifiers and Asian Games on our road to Tokyo 2020.”
Teo has quit school for a year to concentrate on qualifying for the Asian Games 2018 to be held in Indonesia and the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Along with her 470 Class partner Yukie Yokoyama, the duo picked up a gold medal for Singapore at the 2017 SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur.
Said Mr Ang Peng Siong, the Chairman of the Chiam See Tong Sports Foundation: “Cheryl and her sailing partner Elisa are determined and have set their sights towards Tokyo 2020.
“We are happy to help them in their journey towards becoming champions for Singapore.”
Another young athlete who received support from the Chiam See Tong Sports Foundation was Muhammad Adam bin Adnan Jalil, a Secondary Two rugby player from Damai Secondary School.
Since launching in March 2017, the Chiam See Tong Sports Foundation has provided aid to athletes like powerlifter Mathew Yap, sailor Olivia Chen, modern pentathlete Kok Kiat Xuan, hurdler Hfaisirr Khann and young footballer Noorazhar Latip.
