It is Thailand for Ilhan Fandi after Belgian stint.

Aug 9, 2024 ,

The third son of Singapore football legend Fandi Ahmad has landed himself a stint in Thailand with BG Pathum United.

While he joins Pathum, his elder brother Irfan Fandi has exited the Pathum after more than five years for Port FC but he will team up with his other brother Ikhsan Fandi at the Thai side.

Which probably leaves fans of Pathum wondering what’s the club’s fascination with the Fandi brothers.

“The club has shown interest in me for a long while and I’m glad to finally be here and I can’t wait to start showing what I can do while helping the club do well in all the competitions that we are in,” the 21-year-old told The Straits Times.

Ilhan joined Belgian side KMSK Deinze in December 2022, after a blinder of a season with Albirex Niigata in the Singapore Premier League where he scored 20 goals in 27 matches.

However, it was less than a month later that he suffered a complete tear of his left anterior cruciate ligament while representing Singapore at the regional ASEAN Football Federation championships in a match at the Jalan Besar Stadium against Vietnam.

BG Pathum begins their season with a match against Sukhothai on 10 August.

How Ilhan performs in Thailand would be anyone’s guess as he continues the family tradition as football wanderers.

His father Fandi played for Dutch side Groningen from 1983 to 1985, and then returned to turn out for KLFA and Pahang in the Malaysian league.

Ikhsan also played for Norway’s second-tier teams Raufoss and FK Jerv from 2019 to 2021.
