Two goals by the Fandi brothers and another by Amiruldin Asraf against Philippines secured Singapore’s U22 a place in the final of the Merlion Cup.
The Young Lions took the lead in the 26th minute through Home United forward Amiruldin after a defensive blinder by the Philippines backline and both Irfan Fandi and Ikhsan Fandi added to Singapore’s 3-0 rout of the Filipinos at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Said Irfan at the post-match media conference: “I feel that having that Mongolia experience was good for us.
“Tempers flared there as well but we kept our cool and did very well. If we are able to do that there, it should not be a problem for us here back home.”
Irfan was referring to the Young Lions’ Asian Football Confederation U23 qualifiers held in Mongolia in March.
The Young Lions will take on Thailand in the finals of the Merlion Cup on Sunday at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
The Thais beat Indonesia 2-1 in the other semi-final in an earlier match.
