Some football fans in Singapore call the English League Cup the Mickey Mouse Cup but it is actually known as the Carabao Cup because of sponsors entitlements.

And even though it is considered one of the three top-tier domestic football competitions in England alongside the Premier League and the FA Cup, the final of the 2022-2023 season between Manchester United and Newcastle United will not been screened on either StarHub or Singtel this year.

Or MediaCorp for that matter.

The Cup final will be played on 26 February at Wembley.

Fans of both the Red Devils and the Magpies in Singapore are now understandably up in arms while fans of other clubs whose stars did not make the finals are now looking the other way and are suggesting that these hardcore fans to use illegal set top boxes to watch the final.

It is not an alternative which TMSG condones as it is illegal.

Both StarHub and Singtel informed that Straits Times following queries that the final will not be broadcast.

A Singtel spokesman also reasoned that the telco did not seek the right to broadcast the final “given the limited appeal compared to more popular football competitions like the Uefa Champions League and English FA Cup”.

Then maybe they can explain why they screen the Singapore Premier League given the very limited appeal among Singapore fans.

Starhub obtained the rights to the English Premier League all the way to the 2027/2028 season.

Fans saw the humour over the news that the match will not be shown live in Singapore.
