History has repeated itself once again as the Singapore Lions will find themselves being led by another Japanese.
On 1 February, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announced that Japanese Tsutomu Ogura will be Takayuki Nishigaya’s replacement.
It was the worst kept secret.
The post on Facebook was posted shortly after 3pm, while a media conference was ongoing.
The 57-year-old was a former assistant coach of the Japanese national team from 2006 to 2010 and its Olympic team from 2010 to 2012.
His last role was at Tokyo Verdy where he was also assistant coach.
The team finished third in the J2 League last season, and won promotion through the play-offs to the top tier of Japanese football, but he left recently, as announced by the club on its social media.
Why the FAS continues its faith its Japanese coaches despite their lack of success in Singapore is unknown.
Said FAS President Bernard Tan in quotes carried on CNA, “He might not be as well known to local fans as some of the other candidates that we had spoken to, but I am confident that he will soon win over both the players and the fans, as well as the larger footballing fraternity.”
