Bowler Darren Ong has become the first Singaporean to win a Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) Tour title, clinching the PBA Viper Championship in Reno, Nevada, on 17 March.

The top seed in the stepladder finals, Ong faced American bowling powerhouse E.J. Tackett, a three-time PBA Player of the Year and 25-time tour champion.

But when it mattered most, Ong delivered, keeping his cool to secure a 215-205 victory and lift the coveted trophy.

“It means the world to me. Being able to compete at this level and come away with a win is truly a dream come true,” he told The Straits Times.

Ong’s victory earned him US$20,000 (S$26,600) and made him the first Asian to win a PBA Tour event since Thailand’s Annop Arromsaranon earned the honours in 2018.

Ong’s path to glory was built on consistency and dominance.

He topped the 12-game qualifying round with a stunning 2,897-pinfall total, including three perfect 300 games, before defeating Stuart Williams and Trevor Roberts 3-0 in the elimination bracket to secure his top seed position.

Tackett, in strong form with two tour titles already this season, stormed through the finals, eliminating Jason Belmonte, Zach Wilkins, and Kristopher Prather.

But against Ong, he found an opponent who was unshakable under pressure.

“The three perfect games were a pleasant surprise but I didn’t let that affect my routine in any way.”

“I took one frame at a time and made the best decision I could at each moment; the strong qualifying set me up in a good position going into the matchplay…” said Ong.

Senior national assistant coach Vincent Lim called Ong’s win a breakthrough moment.

“Many Singaporean and Asian bowlers dream of competing on the PBA Tour.

“For Darren to secure a victory against over 200 professional competitors at the gruelling World Series of Bowling is not only a remarkable achievement but also a powerful source of inspiration,” Said Lim.

Ong’s rise has been meteoric.

After winning his first international title at the Philippine International Open last May, he claimed the singles gold at the IBF World Championships in Kuwait and added two bronze medals.

His achievements earned him the 2024 Singapore Sports Awards’ Sportsman of the Year title.

Now, his focus shifts to the PBA World Championship matchplay on March 20 before he takes on the USBC Masters in Michigan from March 23-30.
