New CEO for Singapore Badminton. So how?

Apr 3, 2025 ,

The Singapore Badminton Association (SBA) has a new head honcho, and his name is Woo Kaiwei.

CNA reported, the 40-year-old took over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) on 3 April, replacing Alan Ow, who left the post in December last year.

Woo, a former public servant, has spent time in the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), the Public Service Division in the Prime Minister’s Office, and Singapore Press Holdings.

Most recently, he was the head of strategic planning and corporate development at So Drama! Entertainment, a MINDEF-affiliated organisation.

Now, he’s in charge of steering Singapore badminton forward.

Some may question whether Woo, without a badminton background, is the right fit.

“I am both excited and humbled to be entrusted with the mandate of furthering the association as a globally recognised badminton powerhouse while fostering a nation united by the love of badminton,” said Woo.

Big words, but here’s the reality check: Singapore badminton isn’t exactly striking fear into opponents on the global stage as much as the Indonesians or Malaysians do from this region.

The last time a Singaporean made the world sit up was when Loh Kean Yew won the 2021 Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championship.

SBA president Lawrence Leow says Woo stood out in multiple rounds of interviews.

The final panel, featuring the Singapore Sport Institute and SBA’s executive committee, was impressed by his strategy, which included grassroots growth, athlete development, stakeholder engagement, and organisational improvements.

That all sounds great on paper.

But talking strategy in a boardroom is one thing, making real changes is another.

Singapore badminton has talent, but can it sustain high-level performance?

If Woo wants to make an impact, he’ll need to focus on long-term athlete development, better funding structures, and ensuring promising shuttlers don’t burn out before hitting their peak.

He also has to convince a badminton-loving nation that SBA has what it takes to move beyond occasional flashes of brilliance.

Woo has the credentials, but does he have what it takes to truly elevate Singapore badminton?

Or will this be another case of big ambitions falling short?
