Suspended players from the National Basketball League Division 1 team Adroit who are part of on ongoing Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau match-fixing probe still took to the court in a semi-final match.
On 29 August, the Basketball Association of Singapore (BAS) said it will postpone the 2025 K. Star National Basketball League Division 1 finals, originally scheduled for 30 August to 7 September.
“This will allow for an internal review and appropriate disciplinary procedures to be carried out thoroughly and fairly,” said BAS.
The Adroit players took part in the 55-43 win over Siglap Basketball Club on 27 August.
However, Adroit has since challenged the validity of the suspension.
In a statement, the club said, “The club challenges the validity of the suspension as BAS did not act accordingly to the (BAS) constitution.”
According to CNA, this refers to a part of the constitution that said the disciplinary committee shall be responsible for the first-stage enquiry and adjudication on any matter pertaining to misconduct or violation of rules by any club, organisation, official or player.
The disciplinary committee is also responsible in the event of an appeal after the first stage, and to refer such matters to the appeals committee.
The BAS added that “while this situation is regrettable, it is critical that we follow due process to ensure accountability and uphold the integrity of the game. We seek your understanding and patience as we carry out these proceedings.”
It added that it is conducting a “full review” of the incident, including whether further disciplinary action is warranted.
On 19 August, CPIB announced that nine people had been arrested for their suspected involvement in fixing matches in the competition.
Investigations are ongoing against the nine for suspected offences under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The individuals are ight Singaporeans and one permanent resident and are aged between 19 and 35.
Some of them are players for teams in the league.
