Geylang International’s head coach Mohd Noor Ali has been appointed as the coach of the Singapore Selection side to take on Selangor at the upcoming Sultan of Selangor’s Cup to be held on 27 September in Kuala Lumpur.

It is the first time that Noor is being appointed by the FAS for the role, even though he has been involved in the exhibition match which has been an annual fixture since 2001.

He has also played in the veteran’s match, which is usually a curtain-raiser to the main draw, on three occasions.

Noor was named as the coach of the Singapore side during a ticket presentation ceremony held at Our Tampines Hub on 14 September.

“It is a privilege for me to take part in this Sultan of Selangor Cup.

“I am very grateful to be given this opportunity by the FAS.

“Selangor is a very strong team and this is something that I am looking forward to,” he said.

Matches between Singapore and Selangor have been keenly contested since the 1920s when Singapore was part of the Malaya Cup, an annual event which was inaugurated in 1921.

In the 70s and 80s, the match would feature luminaries like Mokhtar Dahari, Soh Chin Aun and Santokh Singh from Selangor and Quah Kim Song, Samad Allapitchay, S Rajagopal and Dollah Kassim from Singapore, among others.

“We celebrate the longest rivalry in Malayan football,” said Desmond Ong, Deputy President of the FAS.

The match will be held on 27 September at the iconic Merdeka Stadium, with about 2,000 Singapore fans expected to be present.
