Tampines going all out to win as they sign former Japan international.

Jan 5, 2026

BG Tampines Rovers have made quick moves to strengthen their squad by bringing in former Japan international Yuki Kobayashi as they prepare for a demanding start to 2026.

The Stags face a packed calendar, beginning with the Singapore Cup final on 10 January, followed by the resumption of the Singapore Premier League.

On the regional stage, Tampines are through to the round of 16 in the Asian Football Confederation Champions League Two (ACL2) and top Group A of the ASEAN Club Championship, setting up a busy period in the months ahead.

Kobayashi, 33, arrives with a wealth of experience across Asia and Europe and a clear objective: to win.

In a video posted on the club’s social media, he said he is not focused on personal statistics but on helping Tampines lift trophies.

“I don’t want to say that I want (to score) 10 goals or make assists. No, I just want to win every game and maybe we can be champions… if I play, I will show my quality. I will show my passion for the club.,” he said.

The midfielder’s career spans Japan’s top flight, the Eredivisie, the Belgian Pro League, K.League 1, and the Qatar Stars League.

He made 85 appearances in the J1 League with Vissel Kobe, Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo, and Jubilo Iwata and played 89 times for SC Heerenveen in the Netherlands between 2016 and 2019.

Kobayashi also earned eight caps for the Japanese national team, gaining experience at the highest level of international football.

According to The Straits Times, Tampines coach Noh Rahman welcomed the signing, noting Kobayashi’s ability to play as a deep-lying midfielder or creative playmaker.

With a congested fixture list approaching, Noh emphasized the importance of having depth and versatility in the squad.

“When we look at our fixtures in January and February, we’ve got like 11 or 12 games in that period. It is natural that the squad needs to be rotated at some point, so we felt that it’s important to ensure we have the numbers to keep everyone fresh.” he said.

The midfielder has already impressed during training.

He arrived nearly an hour early for his first session to stretch and prepare, demonstrating his professionalism and dedication.

Noh praised his character, describing him as humble, respectful, and coachable, with a strong understanding of what it means to be professional.

Tampines have also strengthened other areas of the squad, signing 20-year-old defender Raoul Suhaimi from the Young Lions, while midfielders Ong Yu En, 22, and Rae Peh, 17, return after loan spells.

The new additions are expected to feature in the Singapore Cup final against defending champions Lion City Sailors at Jalan Besar Stadium.
