Singapore’s shot putter Diroy Noordin earned a first gold medal outside of the swimming pool at the ongoing ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia when he hit the high notes in the F40/41 shot put event.
The ASEAN Para Games is currently ongoing in Phnom Penh, following the Southeast Asian Games and will end on 9 June.
At the Morodok Techo National Stadium, Diroy’s heave of 9.17m was enough to earn him the gold medal in the event.
His personal best in the event is 9.92m.
He pipped Indonesia’s Ansyari Sugian Noor (8.81m) and Vietnam’s Tran van Nguyen (8.38m) to the gold medal.

“I felt a bit nervous today and I was not so confident,” he told The Straits Times.
“But I just tried my best to stay focused, relaxed and just gave it my all.
“My competitors this year were getting better in terms of throwing strength, so it was a bit difficult.”
Apart from Diroy, swimmer Toh Wei Soong captured another two gold medals in the men’s S7 50m freestyle and butterfly, both in Games records.
