A street soccer court around Block 422 in Bedok North at the Garden Hill estate has been closed temporarily while the Town Council looks at repurposing the place into a “more versatile community space” for more residents to enjoy.

All because of the complaints of noise.

A netizen who posted the notice from the Member of Parliament for the area Tan Kiat How called it utter nonsense.

In his notice, he said that there were concerns about the “inconsiderate usage of the street soccer court late into the night”.

He does not explain how late is late.

It is understood that other basketball courts or play areas would have the lights turned off between 9pm to 10pm daily.

His notice added that the street soccer court would be closed temporarily and that the area may be repurposed into a more versatile space for more residents to enjoy.

Meanwhile, netizens have reacted to the post which was posted on Instagram as a collaboration between Wake Up Singapore and TMSG.

While there will always be tradeoffs in decisions given that the spaces are meant for community use, the move to obliterate football away from the void decks and now from street soccer courts, which is meant for football does not serve Singapore’s football goals in any way.

More recently, TMSG’s story about the barricading of a void deck in Woodlands sparked a debate about whether we were being too harsh towards children, who also needed spaces to play and build neighbourly relationships.

If a street soccer court meant for playing football is now deemed out of bounds due to noise, then the death of football is imminent.

It is already in the intensive care unit, for that matter.
