Is DPMM dumping the SPL and headed to Malaysia?

Apr 22, 2025 ,

Brunei’s Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota (DPMM) FC might be ghosting the Singapore Premier League (SPL) again and this time, it looks like they’re the ones walking out the door.

The club is now eyeing a return to the Malaysia Super League (MSL).

In a recent update on their official website, DPMM boldly declared their intent, even stating that signing record-breaking SPL striker Tomoyuki Doi “will help DPMM to excel in the league for their debut season in the MSL.”

Big words but nothing’s confirmed yet.

The Straits Times reported that the Head coach Jamie McAllister played it safe when asked, saying the move is “not confirmed.”

Still, their online updates sound increasingly confident, with the club adding that talks with the MSL are “looking positive.”

Even Malaysia’s New Straits Times has jumped on the story, reporting DPMM’s intentions to rekindle old flames.

If they do leave, the SPL will be down to just eight teams.

Not that you’d notice, some weekends it already feels like a ghost town.

“Brunei DPMM is a long-time, valued partner of our local football fraternity and we are looking forward to watching them compete for honours in the upcoming Singapore Cup semi-finals,” said the FAS spokesperson.

Translation: “We’re not ready to talk about this yet.”

To be fair, the FAS is running a Request for Proposal to bring in fresh blood, which sounds great, except we’ve been hearing that line since disco was cool.

DPMM, who’ve already won the SPL twice (2015 and 2019), might just be craving a bit more spice in their football life.

So, is this goodbye-for-real this time?

Like a classic SPL storyline, we’ll just have to wait for the sequel.
