Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min’s ended a five-year title drought after smashing her way to a sizzling victory at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour German Open on 2 March.
The 26-year-old world No. 13 sealed a 21-16, 21-17 victory in 41 minutes at the Westenergie Sporthalle in Mulheim, claiming her first World Tour title and the biggest win of her career so far.
The win marked the end of a long, frustrating 66-month wait since her 2019 Hyderabad Open triumph.
Along the way, Yeo endured crushing near-misses, including a heartbreak at the 2021 Hylo Open final and an exit at the Paris 2024 Olympics after missing a match point.
“This title means a lot to me. I’ve gone through so many losses and setbacks that this victory becomes even sweeter,” she told The Straits Times.
Under the guidance of national singles coach Kim Ji-hyun, Yeo has been steadily improving, beating four top-10 players in 2024, including South Korea’s An Se-young and India’s P.V. Sindhu.
Against world No. 29 Thuy Linh, Yeo dominated from the start, racing to a 9-2 lead with sharp drop shots and disguised placements.
The Vietnamese fought back but could not match Yeo’s consistency, with the Singaporean closing out the first game comfortably.
The win boosts Yeo’s confidence as she targets a place in the world’s top 10.
“The ability to adapt to any player and any situation is key, and I know I have to be consistent every day in order to win titles,” she said.
