National men’s U22 coach Philippe Aw has resigned and he will be replaced by Nazri Nasir in the latest coaching developments at the Football Association of Singapore (FAS).

Aw, whose last assignment was leading the Men’s Under-22 team in the recently concluded SEA Games 2023 in Cambodia, was also the FAS’ Head of Methodology.

His departure comes in the wake of the Singapore’s disastrous showing at the SEA Games where the Young Lions finished with only a single point to their names.

His replacement is Nazri, who relinquished the role of Young Lions and U22 coach in favour of Aw, and prior to taking up the role as Young Lions lead, Aw was Assistant Coach to Nazri Nasir for the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Asian Cup 2022 Qualifiers campaign in 2021.

Nazri is currently the national assistant coach to Takayuki Nishigaya.

He was also unable to take the Young Lions past the group stages at the SEA Games in 2022.

The FAS said that Nazri has accepted the task of taking charge of the Singapore Men’s U22 team for the specific purpose of seeing the team through September’s Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 Qualifiers in Vietnam.

“I am aware that this is a hot seat at the moment, given the public sentiments post SEA Games.

“All my career, I never shy away from difficult challenges, and I asked FAS to let me take a shot at it and laid out what I need to give a good account of ourselves at the tournament as I believe we will have a decent chance.

“Given the recent changes regarding tournament preparation, I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Nazri.

The upcoming AFC Under-23 Asian Cup Qatar 2024 Qualifiers will take place from 6 September to 12 September 2023.

Singapore will first face off against Yemen before taking on Guam on 9 September.

Their final qualifier sees them squaring off against the host of Group C, Vietnam.
